  • This role is designed to equip individuals with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the machine shop, specifically within the toolroom department.
  • The trainee will learn the intricacies of precision tool making, focusing on the design, fabrication, and maintenance of tooling used in high-precision manufacturing processes within the automotive steel components and fine blanking domain.
  • This is a hands-on learning experience, providing a strong foundation for future specialization in tool design, tool maintenance, or other advanced machine shop operations.
Responsibilities :
  • Assist experienced toolmakers in the fabrication and maintenance of precision tooling for various automotive steel components.
  • Learn and practice basic machining operations on CNC and manual lathes, milling machines, and grinding machines.
  • Study and understand tool design drawings and specifications.
  • Perform basic tool geometry calculations and measurements.
  • Learn the fundamentals of tool material selection and heat treatment processes.
  • Participate in the assembly and disassembly of complex tools and dies.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving tool-related issues during production runs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in the toolroom.
  • Follow all safety protocols and best practices in the machine shop environment.
  • Maintain detailed records of tool modifications and maintenance activities.
  • Attend scheduled training sessions and workshops on advanced machining techniques and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure tool designs meet the specific requirements of automotive components.
  • Gain exposure to various quality control procedures related to tool making.
  • Assist in the development of new tooling for innovative automotive steel component designs.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement initiatives within the toolroom.
Technical Skills :
  • Machine Shop Fundamentals - A strong understanding of basic machining operations, including turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and reaming. Familiarity with different types of machine tools and their applications.
  • Tool Design & Engineering - Ability to read and interpret tool design drawings and specifications. Basic knowledge of tool geometry, cutting tool materials, and tool wear mechanisms.
  • CNC Machining - Practical experience in programming and operating CNC lathes and milling machines. Familiarity with G-code and M-code programming languages.
  • Manual Machining - Proficient in using manual lathes, milling machines, and other hand-operated tools. Ability to perform precise measurements and adjustments.
  • Tooling Materials and Heat Treatment - Knowledge of various tool materials used in automotive manufacturing, including high-speed steel, carbide, and ceramic. Understanding of heat treatment processes for enhancing tool life and performance.
  • Tooling Inspection and Quality Control - Ability to use precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauge blocks. Understanding of tolerance limits and dimensional accuracy requirements for tooling.
  • ISO/TS 16949 - Basic knowledge of ISO/TS 16949 standards related to quality management systems in the automotive industry.
Soft Skills :
  • Communication - Effective communication with team members and supervisors, clearly conveying information regarding tool design, fabrication, and maintenance. Active listening to understand instructions and feedback.
  • Problem-Solving - Troubleshooting tool-related issues during production and identifying solutions to maintain optimal tooling performance.
  • Time Management - Managing time effectively to complete assigned tasks within deadlines and prioritize work based on production requirements.
